Dr. Etienne A. Mejia is a board certified orthopedic surgeon
with subspecialty fellowship training in arthroscopy, athletic
injuries, sports medicine and rehabilitation. He also has wide
interests in general orthopedic surgery. He is a native of San
Juan, Puerto Rico. He attended Tulane University (B.S., Cum
Laude with Honors, 1984) and Tulane School of Medicine (M.D.,
1988) in New Orleans. He completed his orthopedic surgery residency
at the Naval Medical Center in San Diego.
During Dr. Mejia's medical career, he spent 10 years in the United States Navy
after medical school. He was trained as an aerospace medicine
specialist and served as a naval flight surgeon with the U.S.
Marines in California. During that time, he was deployed to
the Gulf War during Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm.
His accomplishments during this and other deployments earned
him the prestigious Flight Surgeon of the Year Award for Fleet
Marine Forces Pacific. As an orthopedic surgeon, he headed the
Department of Orthopedics at the U.S. Naval Hospital Roosevelt
Roads on the largest naval base in the world. His many medals
and awards include two Navy Commendation medals and a Navy Achievement
medal. He left the Navy in 1998 as a Lieutenant Commander.
After his naval service, Dr. Mejia dedicated a year of additional
subspecialty orthopedic training in sports medicine and rehabilitation.
He obtained his fellowship at the internationally recognized
Cincinnati Sportsmedicine and Orthopaedic Center, one of the
first and most renowned sports medicine programs in the country.
During his fellowship, his exposure ranged from the Olympic
and professional athlete to the weekend recreational athlete.
In addition, he served as team physician for several high schools.
While in Cincinnati, he teamed up with engineers at University
of Cincinnati to study the posterior cruciate ligament of the
knee. His research has been published and presented at national meetings.
Dr. Mejia has acquired extensive experience with athletic injuries
and rehabilitation, including complex knee and shoulder problems.
His training encompasses the most advanced arthroscopic techniques
of the knee, shoulder, elbow and ankle. He has special interest
in joint and ligament reconstructions, repair and transplantation
of cartilage and meniscus in the knee, and shoulder surgery
for instability and rotator cuff problems. From his extensive
rehabilitation experience, Dr. Mejia finds that most extremity
problems are successfully treated without surgery. In addition,
he utilizes his principles of sports medicine, arthroscopic
surgery and rehabilitation for the everyday nonathlete and worker
with great success.
Dr. Mejia dedicates much of his time to
teaching, research and involvement in the community. He hosts
monthly and annual seminars for physical therapists throughout the region
to promote the scientific approach to sports medicine and rehabilitation
via critical review of the current literature. He is involved
in resident teaching as preceptor for the U.W. Fox Valley Family
Practice residency program. He frequently speaks about orthopedics
and sports medicine topics at local hospitals, schools and industries.
He is also the head team physician for the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers minor league
baseball team, and several are high schools.
